Top 3 Causes of Traumatic Burn Injuries

Did you know that in the United States alone, there are more than 500 burn injuries that are treated every year? This high number of injuries means it is evident that some are going to be very severe, if not fatal. This list consists the top 3 causes of traumatic burn injuries, and the likelihood of the specific type of burn happening to you.

Open Contact with Flame (46% of all burns) – House Fire

One of the worst kinds of injuries relating to burns is having one’s whole body set aflame, an unfortunate fate for some that are caught in house fires. While house fires do not account for 46% of all burns, exposure to open flames do. Luckily, most of them are small burns, but house fires are technically in this category. Those who are fortunate enough to make it out of house fires alive after being burned often experience very severe burns that may very well affect them for the rest of their lives.

Electrical Burns (4% of all burns)

Some of the worst types of burns are those of electrical burns. This may mean a simple shock from a low voltage electrical outlet, or being struck by lightning. Contact with higher voltage electricity can often lead to extreme burns, if not death. This is a much different type of burn than one with an open flame, though it has the potential to be just as bad, if not worse.

Chemical Burns (3% of all burns)

These burns are very rare, but they do happen. Usually resulting from spilled chemicals that burn the skin, they can leave victims in high amounts of pain, and can be fatal if too much body is exposed to the chemical.

If you have experienced a traumatic burn, or know a loved one that has, it is important to seek out a qualified attorney right away. Time is of the essence. Depositions will need to be taken.
